Outsider Art
Methods and Activities
Introduction/sketches
- 1. The students will be given colored pencils and told to choose three colors (white and black included) to make their sketch.
- 2. The students will spend 2 minutes drawing whatever they feel like using their three colors on paper (colored if white is one of their colors). At the end of the 2 minutes, the students will trade their paper and their colored pencils with their neighbor who will draw for 2 more minutes. The sketches will have contributions from everyone in the class.
- 3. When the sketches are complete, I will introduce Jean Dubuffet and give examples of his work.
- 4. The students will have the rest of the day to come up with ways to create a sculpture using foam in the same style of Dubuffet.
- 5. From sketching to planning it out on the foam will take about a week.
Assembly
- 1. The students will be given an additional 2 weeks to complete the sculpture. (Feb. 8)
Assessment/closing
- 1. The students will have a small group critique when they have all finished.
